About our client: Our client is a 70-person Real Estate investment firm with offices across Chicago, New York and Puerto Rico. They focus on multi-family residential real estate development, acquisitions, asset and property management, leasing and corporate real estate services in up-and-coming Chicago neighborhoods. The Company has developed, owned or managed more than 2500 multi-family apartment units valued in excess of $200 million.

About the role:

The Attorney will lead and be integral to collections and eviction efforts.  The Attorney will represent our client in all aspects of litigation, including but not limited to filing pleadings and motions; attending court hearings, mediations, arbitrations, depositions, and trials; arguing motions; interacting with courts, opposing counsel, and tenants. Additionally, the Attorney will ensure compliance with the applicable consumer laws and jurisdictional litigation rules and procedures; assist in development of internal requirements, guidelines, and protocols; collaborate with other attorneys, business, and Compliance on implementation of recovery strategies, including assisting with coordinating internal and third-party collection strategies. Attorney must possess the ability to quickly grasp and apply overall legal and business concepts relating to collections and eviction litigations in a fast-growing environment. Attorney will report to the General Counsel.

Major Responsibilities

  • Evaluation of housing situation by reviewing lease agreements, eviction notices, verifying applicable protections and any other relevant documents
  • Go through case files to determine the details regarding property/tenant eviction issues.
  • Obtain information and documentation regarding timely completion of eviction processes.
  • Coordinate with our client’s brokers to determine and verify occupancy information required to complete eviction paperwork.
  • Draft show-cause hearing documents and prepare stipulations and affidavits for internal and external signatures.
  • Correspond with borrowers, tenants, brokers, and clients through various methods, such as drafting personal property notices and following up with local counsels regarding hearings and trials.
  • Prepare affidavits and other documents
  • Gather and analyze research data such as statutes and legal articles.
  • Prepare for trials by organizing exhibits and file pleadings with court clerks in an accurate and timely manner
  • Handle screening, intake, provision of technical and investigative support, and provide legal advice as required.
  • Handle court submissions, perform billing functions, and handle record keeping activities.

The Success Candidate Will Possess:

  • D. degree and be licensed to practice law in Illinois
  • Knowledge of landlord-tenant, housing law, and the eviction process
  • Litigation experience preferred
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills
  • Experience in trial advocacy and negotiation strongly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral/written communication, research skills, and computer competency
  • Organizational and case management skills
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member
